I’m Faisal (Nadimul Haque Faisal), Professor of Surface Engineering & Micromechanics at the School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen, UK. I am also a Founder of startup company Sequetrics Limited, developing sensing and imaging techniques to automate surface inspection for safety.

I define myself as an experimental researcher, and specialises in research, teaching, and development of advanced materials and processes at the intersection of surface science & engineering and multi-scale mechanics. It includes the study and application of technologies to enhance material and structural/functional performance, reliability and sustainability for range of applications.

My recent interest focuses on thermal spray coatings, metasurface, materials for steam & thermochemical cycle electrolysis, non-destructive testing (NDT), acoustic emission (AE) wave propagation in multi-layer structures, residual strain measurement using neutron diffraction, corrosion monitoring, nano/micromechanics, surface/subsurface degradation, with some recent interest in geothermal energy, and actively contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

As part of my academic career, I have collaborated with many international and academic-corporate collaborations) (Scopus), and have supervised/co-supervised post-graduate research students with 15 completions.

Experience includes leading/co-leading research projects funded by UKRI’s EPSRC (EP/W033178/1 (METASIS), UKRI3156 (METASIS 2.0)), EPSRC NetworkPlus in Digitalised Surface Manufacturing (DSM), Henry Royce Institute, Scottish Funding Council (SFC), SFC’s CR&D, Scottish Enterprise, Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC), Centre of Excellence for Sensor and Imaging Systems (CENSIS), The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Scottish Institute of Remanufacture (SIR), National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), Innovate UK, Innovate UK Edge, The Data Lab & number of small/large companies (>20). I have been part of RGU’s accelerator (cohort 1), and Glasgow based Smart Things Accelerator Centre (STAC) accelerator (cohort 3).
